Q&A: How large a part do lyrics play in your appreciation of music?

February 20th, 2012

Question by : How large a part do lyrics play in your appreciation of music?
If, for example, a song expresses a viewpoint that you don’t agree with, or that you feel uncomfortable hearing, would you still listen to it?

Or alternatively, do you ever listen to music you would usually dislike except that you love the lyrics?

If the lyrics don’t relate to me, I’ll still listen to the song if it’s good

A very big part. I don’t like Frank Zappa’s music, but I LOVE his lyrics. I don’t like Motley Crue’s lyrics but I love their music.

For me, if the lyrics of a song are good, this will of course add to my enjoyment of the song. If they are bad, (poorly written, immature, etc…), then I will probably not enjoy that song. Very often I am not able to understand the lyrics of songs, in which case my enjoyment will be based entirely upon the music itself. On the whole, I don’t mind if a song has lyrics that I don’t necessarily agree with, (unless it’s like a neo-nazi band or something), provided the lyrics are well written. For instance, one of my favorite songs is Anthem by Rush, which is basically a song espousing the ideals of libertarianism, however I am more or less a socialist. To sum up, yes lyrics play a vital role in my appreciation of music, whether they affect it negatively or positively.

And to your second question, no.

I’m a christian and I sometimes listen to music that says horrible things about God/Christianity, but It doesn’t bother me too much. Sometimes it only the lyrics that make me want to listen to a song, other times it can just be the instrumentals.

Yes – I like the lyrics to be good but it’s the music I liten to.
