Battery stops working due to the chemical compound between two poles running out. Also part of metal used for negative pole solved every time battery was used.

The battery electrolyte eventually depletes.
The plates can not hold the charge, therefore the electrolyte has to be renewed, or battery renewed if Gel type battery.
